The quality of the knurled AtomGripz grippers are without doubt superb, however, not one to rest on his laurels, Lloyd then came up with an "old school" style gripper. The handles are made from stainless steel and complemented with a smooth gun-metal finish..... Read on below
Review: AtomGripz Smooth Hand Grippers
If you've read my review for the knurled handled AtomGripz hand gripper you will already have an idea of what we think about these grippers, if not, go check it out. Back to these smooth handled grippers then. The first thing you notice is the feel of the gripper when you pick it up. It's much heavier than the aluminium knurled handled AtomGripz Gripper, which instantly makes you want to squeeze out a few reps.
The gun-metal finish provides a very slight amount of "hand traction" preventing the gripper slipping (completely) from your grasp however the smooth finish makes them a fair bit trickier to use than the oh-so-grippy knurled handles. With this in mind you might want to consider the "difficulty" of closing a smooth gripper rather than just the rated spring strength.
Having just compared a 2 band knurled against a 2 band smooth the knurled handle just sits in your hand and goes nowhere whereas the smooth handle needed a slight re-adjustment of the lower fingers after each rep but it's oh so comfortable in my soft un-trained hands.
Do I have a favourite, Knurled or Smooth? hmmmm I love them both but having the knurled 2 band on my desk it is the one I keep using however if a smooth and a knurled were side by side I would find myself going for the smooth each time, just because it feels so much more "industrial" thanks to the weight of it's stainless steel handles. Can't decide? treat yourself and get both. One for the car or work and one for home better than two identical ones. You'll easily be able to re-sell them when the time comes to moving up to the next level.

AtomGripz Gripper buying guide :
1 Band - AtomGripz Single Band Gripper "Advanced Beginner" - (Smooth Gun-Metal) Gripper Superstore rate the single band AtomGripz gripper on a par with the original Captains Of Crush "Trainer" model and suggest it's used for no less than a "very well trained female athlete" or "Male athlete with some moderately heavy weight training experience" For the complete beginner or younger trainer the Heavy Grip 100 would be a step down from this gripper and be the best place to start. Also great for warm-up sets once your grip development moves up a gear. 2 Band - AtomGripz Double Band Gripper "Advanced Novice" - (Smooth Gun-Metal) This is the gripper received as our evaluation sample, exception being our sample came with a "sharp" knurl which considering the expected level of grip experience was a little to harsh so like Gripper Superstore we spec. the double band gripper with a medium knurl. Gripper Superstore rate the AtomGripz Double band gripper on a par with the COC #1 which "will challenge women that are hard core strength athletes - throwers, power-lifters, weightlifters, strong-woman, etc. - and men with a significant amount of heavy lifting under their belts" 3 Band - AtomGripz Triple Band Gripper "Advanced" - (Smooth Gun-Metal) Advanced is exactly what the Triple Band AtomGripz is, this is to say advanced grip strength not just someone that could be classed as an advanced strength trainer. In the words of Gripper Superstore "This gripper will stop most men with no specific training and is a great goal gripper or to help move up to heavier grippers". Also rated by them as an equivalent to COC #2.5 - Myself, I can get half a rep with my strong hand so this gripper and above are a long way off for me. 4 Band - AtomGripz Quad Band Gripper "Master"- (Smooth Gun-Metal) For me closing this gripper even just for a single rep. this is a pipe dream. But I'm just your "average" strength trained middle aged bloke who spends too much time these days at the keyboard rather than in the gym as I did 10+ years ago. Enough about my failings, back to the gripper. Our friends at Gripper Superstore in America rank the AtomGripz Quad Band gripper somewhere between the COC #3 and #3.5 grippers so that's where we'll place it. A true Strongman rating. 5 Band - AtomGripz Five Band Gripper "Beyond Elite" - (Smooth Gun-Metal) No, seriously, this is more than just a challenge, it's a challenge for the strongest of strongmen. The feel and finish are as you'd expect from AtomGripz but this is a beast. In fact, it's such a beast it's gone off the scale of classification that Gripper Superstore use for gauging all the grippers on their site (check it out at www.GripperSuperstore.com if you're in the U.S.). In their own words "If you are into big grippers pick one of these beauties up. We do believe it is closable and would like to see it done." So lets see some YouTube footage start appearing soon. 6 Band - AtomGripz Six Band Gripper "LOL" - (Smooth Gun-Metal) Based on the extreme strength required to even move the AtomGripz Five Band Gripper I reckon this is bad boy has been made as an exercise in engineering rather than a practical work piece. That said, as all AtomGripz grippers are hand made in England I don't see anything wrong with turning out the heaviest and strongest gripper in the world just because you can. Pushing the boundaries is what it's all about. Having something that is possibly exceeding the physical limitations of the mechanics of human physiology means that there will always be somewhere to aim for and who knows... one day.. but until then the AtomGripz 6 band gripper is an incredible talking point, a supreme piece of engineering and something every gym should have chained to their counter to shut up the B.S. boys. ;¬)
