With the arrival of rubber medicine balls there has been a big decline in the availability of leather medicine balls. Fortunately a few manufacturers still keep the spirit of old school medicine ball training going by continuing to produce a small range in leather. What's so special about leather? Well for starters harder to hold, catch and throw as the leather is nowhere close to being as grippy as rubber balls, so "catching" a large leather medicine ball requires quite a different style. Leather balls also don't bounce and are softer than rubber. A few years back we had some leather medicine balls from Blitz the martial arts people. Those balls were so out of balance they would roll in a circle along the floor. Current brands are may better but there's always a chance they won't be EXACTLY balanced, but this is what makes leather balls so much of a challenge to catch.
