Our Olympic 3" Fat Bar is not just another thick bar or even a thick Fat Bar but THE daddy of the bunch. For most folks the 2" or 2.5" fat bars are more than enough, but for those really big guys with fingers like The Terminator you'll have to hang on with all your might for this 3" Fat Bar is a force to be reckoned with.
At GymratZ we would only advise going for the full 3" worth of thick bar if you've already out-grown a 2" fat bar and a 2.5" Fat Bar, both of which are awesome for increasing arm and shoulder strength.
Fat Bar Training
The wisdom of fat bar training is many fold, but some thoughts to ponder on are that when lifting something that is difficult to hold on to you recruit more muscles than you would normally, not just your forearms but biceps, triceps and deltoids.
No-one wants to be pinned under a bar or drop a barbell or weight because they lost grip so you absolutely MUST grip hard it's not a conscious grip but an action of the sub conscious, something that obeys the laws of cause and effect. If you want the effect of lifting a heavy weight that is difficult to hold or grip the only answer is to grip with a greater force.
Fat Bar Strength Training experiment - Try clenching your fist as hard as you can and feel the increased muscle involvement work all the way up your arm, now clenching BOTH fists and feel the contractions increase even further and in both arms. That's why Fat Bar Training is really taking off in power-lifting gyms, commercial gyms, personal training studios and for sports specific athletes where grappling and grip strength is king of the ring.
Forearm and grip strength can be trained easily with hand grippers but for the ultimate in all-round grip and arm strength improvement start training with fat bars and fat grip cable handles, fat grip trap bars and curl bars etc and watch your strength hit new heights.
