A single gum shield like this "boil & bite" one is most popular for martial arts sparring where typically head contact is minimal and usually light. Being top teeth only the other benefit of this gum shield is it doesn't restrict your breathing if you are forced to breathe through your mouth due to either a head cold (blocked nasal pasages) or indeed deviated septum and other medical conditions which may also restrict nasal air flow.
Cheap and cheerfull. regularly lost or dropped so worth getting a few in.
